US tourism data reveals a surge in tourism and a slow recovery
A look at the number of people visiting the US from outside the US this year, according to new data from tourism company NCSL.
While the number visiting from abroad has been steadily declining since the beginning of the year, the number arriving in the US in 2017 surpassed last year’s total for the first time.
“The surge in the number visitors is unprecedented, with a total of 683,000 visitors from outside of the United States in the first quarter of 2017,” said Andrew Pincus, NCSl’s director of tourism.
“Our numbers indicate a significant increase in visitors in the past two months and we are now in the midst of an unprecedented tourist season that is expected to last for months.”
The US was the second-most visited country in the world in 2017, trailing only Japan, according the NCSls data.
But in recent months, the United Kingdom, Canada and Australia have all begun to see their tourism numbers decline, with the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and China now outstripping the US.
“There has been a clear decline in the U.S. visitor population in recent years,” said Mr Pincuses co-founder and chief executive of the NCP.
“We are expecting a rebound in the second half of the new year.”
The United States saw a record number of international tourists in 2016, and the country saw a significant rise in foreign visitors in 2017 compared to 2016.
The number of foreign visitors from abroad increased by about 13% compared to the same period in 2016.
While some of that growth has been attributed to economic factors, Mr Pucson said the growth was largely due to tourism.
In 2017, about $9.4 billion was spent on tourism, and Mr Pancus said the number was expected to rise to $10 billion by the end of the summer.
“International visitors to the United State are a major source of income for our businesses, generating more than $15 billion in tourism-related spending in the state, which generates more than 50,000 jobs,” he said.
The figures were released in partnership with Tourism Analytics, a company that measures the economic impact of travel to the US, and based on information provided by the NIS.
It comes as a result of the recent US-Pakistan nuclear deal, which saw a total reduction in tensions between Washington and Islamabad.
While most tourists visiting the United Sates were likely to have come to the country to experience the natural beauty of the state and the history of its people, there was also a notable rise in people visiting from other countries, including China, Russia, India, Mexico and South Africa.
“With over 10 million visitors in 2016 and almost 683.7 million visitors arriving in 2017 in the United STATES, we expect a significant rebound in tourism in the coming year,” Mr Psuces said.
The report shows that while the number in the total US population has remained relatively stable, the population from overseas is expected by 2019 to have grown to almost 6.5 million people.
“As our population continues to grow, the US is poised to overtake the UK, Canada, Australia and New Zealand as the world’s top destination for visitors,” Mr Nancs said.
“Tourism has grown significantly over the past decade, but it is not the sole source of economic growth for many Americans.
A strong economic recovery and a renewed confidence among the American public will play a key role in maintaining and accelerating tourism growth in the next several years.”
