Cape verde tourists are ‘too busy’ to travel to Antarctica
Cape verdade tourism has fallen in popularity over the past year due to the ongoing ice storm, with Cape Verde tourism manager David Leppert saying he has been forced to cancel all of his planned trips to the island this year.
The latest news about tourism comes after the tourism board said last week that the island’s tourist season was being cancelled.
The tourism board’s executive director, Steve Schram, said that “too many Cape Verdes” were “too busy” to visit the world’s second-largest continent, saying the islanders “are tired and they are busy”.
Mr Schram said that the winter storms and cold weather had been causing “significant” problems for the island.
The last time Mr Schrams was asked to speak about tourism in the region was back in October 2016, when he said that tourists were “not going to be able to go” to Antarctica until the end of 2018.
In February, the Cape Verdade Tourism board said it was cancelling its planned 2018-19 tourism season, citing a lack of interest from the island population.
The board also said that there were “significant problems” with the island of Bali, where there was “no evidence of tourists”.
Mr Leppart said that when he visited the islands last year, he noticed “a lot of people are doing nothing” about tourism, and that “this year we’re seeing a big drop”.
He said that while there were people doing “everything” to try and get tourists to visit, they “aren’t doing anything”.
“There’s not a lot of tourists coming here, so the situation is very bad,” Mr Leippert said.
“This year we are cancelling our tourist season.”
Cape Verdel Tourism is one of the islands largest tourist organisations, operating four resorts on the island and two smaller ones.
The most recent tourism figures show that tourist arrivals fell to 1,988 last year from 1,999 in 2015.
Tourism on the mainland is down from 2,099 in 2016, according to the International Tourism Organisation.
Last year, there were around 100 tourists visiting the island, which is home to the largest island population in the world, and there are plans to expand tourism to the islands south coast in the future.
There have also been complaints about the lack of protection and safety for tourists on the islands.
